Jill Scott (n e Joyce Scott) was born to her mother on the 4th of April 1972. As an only girl She was also raised with her grandmother, who was also maternal. Scott was a graduate of the Philadelphia High School for Girls. She then enrolled at Temple University. There, Scott worked at two different jobs while taking classes in secondary education. Her dream was to become a English teacher at the high school level. This dream however, was short-lived when she quit college after three year of studying and becoming a teacher's assistant. Her career began as a spoken-word performer and performing during poetry readings. Then she teamed up with Amir Quest Love Thompson from The Roots. The two ended up working together and co-writing You Got Me. The singer was initially spotted as an artiste at a Roots Show. After that, she got collaborations for instance, with Eric Benet Will Smith, and Common. While on the Canada tour for the Broadway musical Rent She gained invaluable experience performing. Also, she was the first signing agent for Hidden Beach Recordings.
